Planting Walla Walla onion sets gives gardeners large yields of large onions with a very mild, sweet flavor. Onions are considered a garden plant that is grown as an annual in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. Walla Walla onion sets are an easy way to plant these onions because you get results faster than growing Walla Walla onions from seed.

Each order contains 50-70 onion sets that are ready to plant!

According to the Walla Walla Sweet Onions Growing Association, Walla Walla is a Native American word meaning “many waters.” In the late 1800s, a French soldier found sweet onion seeds on the island of Corsica near Italy, and brought them back to Walla Walla. The Walla Walla community, in the southeast corner of Washington state, has since become synonymous with these popular sweet onions.

North Dakota State University Extension says the key to growing large onions is to plant them early so they develop as many leaves as possible in spring. Each leaf creates a ring of an onion. Plant your Walla Walla onion starts in late April in full sun in a Back to Eden Garden. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart in rows that are 12 inches apart.

According to the Illinois Extension Vegetable Garden Guide, you can harvest green onions four to six weeks after planting sets. Onions for drying and storing will be ready in three to four months, which works out to be late August or early September for most gardeners. Harvest onions when the necks are dry or most of the tops have bent over. Pull the onions and allow them to dry for up to four weeks.
